Effectiveness of HIIT?

When running a HIIT program at a 60 second jog for 50-60% MHR then a 90-95% sprint for 30 second what is the effectiveness...I know HIIT is better for increasing your metabolic rate for an extended period of time post-workout...but does anyone have any facts? I haven't seen too many on the things I have read other than that.
