Were you able to read There Eyes Were Watching God?

I'm currently reading this in English, and I must say it is painful. I understand it's written in dialect, but come on. We also read Light in August by Faulkner, who is, of course, a Southern writer, but he only changed a few words(such as Sho for sure, which isn't all that bad), with the rest in English. Am I the only person who finds this difficult and infuriating, ot am I crazy?
