How does uncontrolled growth of settlements on hazardous hill slopes cause landslides?(please help)?

Trees and vegetation which help secure the hillsides with their roots and coverage gives protection from rain etc are removed by settlements and human developments often increasing mudslides, landslides and rockslides.
