Like in Star Trek, is the idea of a civilization without money or equity something that may eventually happen?

Whether you're a trekkie or not, can we fathom a civilization without money in society? I don't know specifically how Star Trek portrays life without money, but I can remember a particular episode/movie where it was discussed and saying how they (in the future) laughed about the idea of money.
