Why are so many people such jerks towards people who are disabled?

Ignorance and stupidity are parts of human nature. Can't be helped. The only sure thing is that everybody, sooner or later, would achieve the same state of being disabled, due to the old age. No doubt that then many of them would understand what does mean to be powerless and ill and would be sorry for their previous bad behaviour.
