Better to carry a bike in the car, or on a rack?

I always carry mine inside and it's in perfect shape. You can lay down some blankets if you're worried. I don't carry it outside because people drive like crazy here and I don't have insurance on my bike. I was rear ended about a year ago already, luckily without the bike.
